CAMPBELL RESIDENCE
This mid-century Canberra home was reimagined through a thoughtful interior design approach that honours its architectural heritage while weaving together eclectic influences from Art Deco, Mid-Century Modern design and contemporary French interior design. STUDIO TABLEAU worked closely with the clients, a family of four, to achieve an interior scheme that respects and elevates the original character of the house, creating a home filled with joy and daily moments of beauty.
STUDIO TABLEAU was engaged for full-service interior design and decoration, guiding the project from early concept sketches through to documentation, construction, and the final decorative layer. Initially working collaboratively with the talented Lucy Strutt Design to produce kitchen, dining and wet area concepts, after Lucy moved to Sydney, STUDIO TABLEAU took over the design, leading the project through detailed design and decoration concepts, documentation, tender, construction, procurement, and installation.
PROJECT STATUS: CONSTRUCTION COMPLETE / DECORATION NEARING COMPLETION
BUILDER: FORREST PROJECTS
JOINER: CREATED BESPOKE JOINERY
Key architectural features—including steel-framed windows, terrazzo floors, original cornices, and unique joinery—were retained and celebrated. Spatial flow was enhanced by extending the kitchen and opening it to the dining area, now anchored by a custom banquet seat and French doors leading to a new outdoor deck.
Custom joinery was introduced throughout the kitchen, laundry, dining, and living areas, while new internal French doors frame a view to Parliament House as you enter the home. STUDIO TABLEAU was engaged throughout the tender and construction process, procuring feature lighting, joinery and door hardware elements for the build, whilst working closely with the contractor, Forrest Projects, joiner, trades and clients to ensure the quality of the built outcome.
The elegantly restrained palette of dark timber floors, crisp white walls, honed marble with accents of black timber, aged brass, original terrazzo and chrome, provided a stunning backdrop, a gallery, for a curated selection of furniture, in various shades of blues, greens and whites, along with decorative objects and original artworks.
Leaning into our own and the clients’ love of Art Deco and Mid-Century design, we sourced one off vintage pieces from a range of Australian antique and vintage dealers and paired these with custom contemporary design pieces.
Art played a key role from the outset; we worked collaboratively with the clients to source original contemporary artworks and prints from galleries and artists, both in Australia and overseas, in several cases organising commissions direct with the artists or their Gallery representatives.
The result is a richly layered home—sophisticated, whimsical, and full of soul. A delicate interplay between heritage and contemporary design infuses the home with warmth, character, and joie de vivre.
In addition to her exceptional taste, Eleanor pays meticulous attention to design details. She never imposed her ideas on us but instead listened to our preferences, making us feel involved in every decision. We grew to trust her judgment, and the results surpassed our expectations.
Our home truly reflects 'us' and is filled with items we will cherish for many years to come.
